Alumni Chapter of Togo
This project aims to raise awareness about fires and teach women in Togo’s markets how to use fire extinguishers effectively. By enhancing their knowledge and skills, the project will empower these women to handle unforeseen fires, reducing property damage and addressing various social concerns.
Togolese markets, serving as the vibrant heart of the local economy and meeting place for many families, have been the scene of devastating fires. Back In 2011, the major markets of Lomé and Kara were engulfed in flames within a few days of each other. More recently, towards the end of 2023, a few days before the year-end festivities, the Agoe Assiyeye market, a prominent market uniting traders from various Togolese regions, was tragically ravaged by fire. Despite the presence of many individuals at the market, they could only watch helplessly as the flames consumed everything until the firefighters arrived.

These tragedies have resulted in significant human and material losses, leading to turmoil and economic instability for many families. Some women, overwhelmed by the devastation of losing all their savings, have collapsed. Lives have been lost, and others are still undergoing treatment. Both men and women have witnessed their hard work being destroyed, leaving them unable to support their families. Confronted with this distressing situation, the young members of the YALI RLC Chapter in Togo have taken action by launching a solidarity initiative. We aim to provide market vendors with fire extinguishers and train them in fire safety procedures to prevent future tragedies from befalling our ancestral land.
Project objectives:
- Securing Togolese markets: Reducing the risk of fires through the distribution of suitable fire extinguishers.
- Train dealers: Educate dealers on the first actions to take in the event of a fire to minimize damage and save lives.
- Raise community awareness: Promote a culture of prevention and safety within markets and surrounding communities.
Call to action: Join us in this noble cause!
Your contribution, no matter how small, can make a huge difference. By supporting this project, you are enabling thousands of merchants to work safely and protect their livelihoods. Together we can create safer and more resilient markets.
